In his seminal essay The Cathedral and the Bazaar, Eric S. Raymond details the emergence of the new distributed development process observed in the development of the Linux kernel. The essay is said to have inspired Netscape to open source its Navigator web browser as a response to Microsoft’s decision to ship Internet Explorer with Windows.
